‘R’s Escape’
Ladder (7 mtr), chrochet of human hair.
(Special made for the ruin of Brederode.)
My association with the ruin is pure nostalgic; Driehuis, Brederode, Velserend….., places where I’ve grown up. That’s why I base this work on the nostalgic- and romantic feelings castles recall at kids. Therefore I used the fairy tale ‘Rapunzel’ as a main point for this work. Rapunzel is locked inside a tower, to keep her ‘pure and innocent’. The only way to meet her, is to climb into the tower through her hair. Rapunzel is, like so many fairy tales, a story about reaching adolescence. In the past girls where seen as grown up by the age of twelve. At this age their longs ‘childrens hair’ was cut of. In the story Rapunzel is struggling her way out of ‘her prison’ the tower. I replaced the long braid by a crochet ladder of human hair, an object being more appropriate at this time. It is hanging from a towerwindow of the castle. a Ladder full of symbolism, just like the story of Rapunzel.
